The CAP Group provides integrated water services to two million people in the province of Milan. It chose to equip its sewage treatment plant in Sesto San Giovanni with a cogeneration system that uses the biogas produced in the process to produce both electricity and heat in the form of hot water.

In May 2018, two biogas-powered Capstone C65 units were installed, so the entire system is able to precisely track biogas production and convert it into electricity even when its production is lower.

The use of this very low-cost biogas for electricity production allows the CAP Group to save on the purchase of electricity from the grid. The robustness and flexibility of the Capstone microturbines are the best allies for applications of this type where the use of low-quality fuel does not affect the life cycle and performance of the machines. Through this installation, the CAP Group was able to achieve increased efficiency and reduced emissions and energy costs, with a 50% reduction in utility costs in the first year.
