DUAL MODE COGENERATION SYSTEM

Cogeneration for the combined production of electricity and superheated water at the Valtournenche power plant

In order to meet the needs of the new Cervinia district heating system, the cogeneration system with Capstone C1000 Turbine in the “Dual Mode” version has been identified for operation in parallel with the grid and in isolation in the event of a blackout, for the combined production of 1000kWel and hot water at 105°C by exploiting the exhaust gases coming out of the turbine used in the district heating network. The package will be supplied with methane gas available from the network, with a turbine inlet pressure of 5.2 bar, which avoids the need for a dedicated methane gas compression kit. The Dual Mode version is able to operate in parallel with the public grid and, in the event of a sudden black-out, the system switches to stand-alone mode in a maximum time interval of 10 seconds (300 seconds for restarting if the 5 C200 modules, which make up the C1000 package, were switched off at the time of the black-out), supplying a set of appropriately selected privileged loads, equal to a maximum of 80% (800kWel) of the total nominal electrical power produced by the 1000kWe turbine.
