IBT INTRODUCES THE SOLUTION THAT IMPROVES DATA CENTRE ECONOMY AND EFFICIENCY

Protecting critical data requires a new ecological and technological sensitivity

THE CURRENT SITUATION

Data Center

In recent years, data centers have become larger and more efficient, but energy consumption is also increasing. This problem came to light ten years ago and, to date, CO2 emissions attributable to the Internet amount to around 1.7-1.8 billion tons. In addition to the power consumption of the equipment, thousands of servers operating in data centers produce a lot of heat that needs cooling. Industry studies calculate that, on average, almost half of the electricity consumed by a data center is used to cool the servers.

  • THE STUDIES

According to a study by the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, a large data center located in a single building can consume 3,000 KiloWatts – this value is close to the energy consumption of 1,000 apartments! For  small and medium-sized business, we can estimate an average consumption of about 300 Kilowatts. And the forecasts are not optimistic: in the next 4 years 3% of CO2 emissions will be attributable to data centers.

  • THE SOLUTION

The new trigeneration systems built with Capstone Green Energy turbines represent a solution to increase efficiency (>30%) and implement the decarbonisation process that global institutions are forcing companies to undertake. If you run on biogas, these systems allow a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions!

99.999% of the watts fed into the grid also produce heat

Almost 100% of the energy consumed in the data center generates heat as a by-product that is not used. To maintain adequate room temperatures, air conditioning must be used to counteract the heat generation.ask for more information.

Green Data Center: the IBT solution

CCHP – COMBINED COOLING, HEAT & POWER

Combined cooling, heat and power generation

Thanks to IBT’s twenty years of experience both in the field of energy efficiency and in that of connectivity in the ICT sector, a solution has been developed that optimizes consumption and reduces pollution and dispersion: a trigenerative system that uses gas turbines and chillers for the combined production of electricity, hot water and chilled water.

The hot water produced by the recovery of thermal energy from the exhaust gases of the Capstone gas turbine can be used to power an absorption refrigerator (or chiller) that produces chilled water for use in the air conditioning system. The CCHP system ensures a saving of more than 30% compared to a separate production of energy, as well as a significant benefit in environmental terms, translatable into a significant decrease in the emission of harmful gases such as CO2 into the atmosphere.
